アーティスト・Wakuの2年振りとなる個展「素朴光」がCON_（東京都中央区日本橋馬喰町 2-2-14 maruka 4F）が開催される。

Wakuは1996年、東京都生まれ。2017年青山学院大学在学中に、ネオンサイン製作を手がける「シマダネオン」の門戸を叩く。翌2018年に単身ニューヨークへ渡り、「ブルックリン・グラス」で修行。2019年に帰国し、同年自身初の個展「Gowanus」を開く。

20世紀初頭に発明されて以降、広告照明としてのネオンサインに与えられ続けてきた記号性を周到に排し、Wakuの作品は、ネオンの光やそれをもたらすネオンガス、ネオン管を意味以前の存在に還元し、再提示する。

本展は、生命とそうでないものとの境界が未分化な領域を探る展覧会。擬人的で、生気論的な「素朴生物学」は、ネオンと生命の関係を予感させながらも、それを揺さぶる。

化学反応のエネルギーによって自ら光を発する深海生物や、38億年前の地球の底で生まれた原始生命体。そうした見立てのもとで、ネオン管を蠢く不活性ガスや、もはや光を発さないガラスの残骸は、かつて与えられた記号性や意味から離れて、鑑賞者の前に現れる。

Waku's first solo exhibition in two years, "素朴光” (Sobokukou), is currently on display at CON_.

Since its invention in the early 20th century, neon has come to symbolize commercial advertisements. Through his works, Waku attempts to extricate and reduce neon light (and the gas and tubes that bring it to life) back to their original existence, before they were imbued with meaning.

This exhibition explores the blurred boundary between living beings and non-living objects. Through the lens of this anthropomorphic and vitalistic “folk biology”, the works both suggest and stimulate a relationship between neon and life.

Just like deep-sea creatures that emit their own light via chemical reactions and primitive life forms born at the bottom of the earth 3.8 billion years ago, the inert gas writhing through the neon tube and the dead glass remnants are divorced from the symbolism and meaning they were given in the past, and appear before the viewer as they are.
